The principal aim of the project is to conduct an ecological survey of the savanna and wetland areas adjacent to the Booth's River and around the track to Lemonal, both in Orange Walk District, northern Belize.
Led by requests from Programme for Belize, the following scientific and technical objectives have been set:
To determine the distribution of wetland, wet savanna and arboreal savanna plant communities within the Rio Bravo Conservation and Management Area (RBCMA).
To survey the savanna and wetland areas, with particular emphasis on plant diversity and establishing soil and water controls. Studies of soil organic content and vegetation density complement an existing Programme for Belize carbon sequestration project.
To provide biological inventories and initiate long-term habitat monitoring.
To train and provide experience for local Programme for Belize staff and student participants in soil and vegetation survey techniques.
